Why Food 12A Photography is WAY Better

Restaurant Owners and Subscription-Based Online Meal Companies all say the same thing when it comes to hiring a photographer for their food products:

I want food porn.

Now, we understand that this is just a turn of phrase, but let’s really explore it. Don’t worry, we’ll keep it clean… mostly.

What Do People Think Food Porn Is?

Ok, just like creativity, photography is subjective. But, for most people, so-called “Food Porn” images are tantalizingly seductive images of food. It’s what people call: “The Money Shot” (keep your mind out of the gutter, K?).

It’s an image of glazed pork easily sliding off the bone as its juices drip.
It’s the slow rise of cookies in the oven with perfectly melted chocolate chips.
It’s the cinnamon-glazed apples being unveiled by the lifting of a piece of pie.

Alright, you get it. Who’s turned on? WHOOPS! We mean HUNGRY??

Sounds great, right? So what’s the problem? Why would we write a Blog that has a problem with food porn photography? Well, just like any X-rated thing, it eliminates a powerful persuader…

The imagination.

Not the John Lennon version of imagination, no, we’re talking about a woman’s skirt that’s high enough to arouse interest yet low enough to pique curiosity kind of imagination… a man’s hip bones and lower abdomen funneling downward towards his prized possession perfectly covered by his swimwear.

Imagination teases your senses and heightens “what could be” rather than exhibiting “what is.”

Food Photography is Enticing… Not Revealing

The problem with so-called “food porn” is that it’s far too revealing. Food bares it all and there’s nothing left to the imagination. It’s only enticing to those craving it or who’ve already experienced it. You don’t want people saying I wonder if that’s really as good as it looks. which is what you get with food porn. Instead…

What you really want people sayings I HAVE to try that!

What would cause them to say something like that? Their imagination. It’s running wild with possibilities. It’s the seductive hint of a food’s deliciousness that’s far more provocative and alluring that creates a longing and desire that food porn can’t match. Which is why we’re calling it Food 12A.

Food Porn No Longer Stands Out

We can be honest about this, it’s Ok… before food porn, food photography was awful. It did nothing to make a burger and fries enticing. It was just a burger and fries. But now, EVERYONE and their Mum is doing food porn photography; causing it’s biggest issue:

Sameness.

If everyone’s doing it, it no longer stands out. That’s why at Daiokan, when restaurant owners or meal plan companies tell us they want food porn photography, we actually take them down a different path. We direct them towards a Food 12A approach because we want them to stand out from the type of food photography everyone else is doing… AND… the type of food photography every potential customer has already seen before.

Sameness is a Loser.

Food 12A is a Food Photography Winner

When it comes to your food, you don’t want people to just “want” it… you don’t want people to just be “curious” about it… you want people to NEED it because your photography made their imagination salivate… they just HAVE to know what it’s like. It’s the actress whose strap fell below her shoulder teasing your mind rather than the kinda stuff that injects your computer with a virus

So, when it’s time to make your food as seductively attractive as possible, go with Food 12A… entice a person’s most powerful persuader… entice the imagination.
